FAQ

About the program

  • What is the en-route Auto Program®?

It’s a free, usage-based insurance program available to Auto insurance clients of Co-operators General Insurance Company (CGIC) in Ontario.

  • Is there a cost to join the program?

No. The en-route Auto Program is free. There’s no cost to enrol or participate.

  • How does the program work?

Register for the program using your Co-operators General Insurance Company (CGIC) Auto insurance policy number. Install the app on your smartphone and then authenticate your account with the activation code we send you. The app uses your phone’s
GPS to track telematics data including your:

    • total kilometers driven
    • time of day you travel
    • location
    • acceleration
    • braking

We use your score to calculate savings of up to 25% on your Auto premiums.

  • What type of smartphone do I need to have?

The en-route app works on iPhone and Android smartphones only. Older operating systems may not be supported, such as iPhone 4 with iOS 7.

  • How can I find out if my phone is supported?

Go to your app store and search for the en-route Auto Program app. In the Information section, you’ll see a Compatibility sub-category where it’ll say if your phone and operating system are compatible with our app.

  • Does the app work on tablets?

This app is built and optimized for smartphones. While it may run on tablets, they’re not supported.

  • Do I need a data plan?

No. You can set the app to upload when you’re connected on Wi-Fi. However, you’ll get more precise trip information if you have data turned on.

  • Does the app use my phone’s data?

By default, the app uses your phone’s data to give you more precise trip information. For a typical driver using data, the app uses about 3 MB per month if you drive 30 minutes per day, 20 days per month. To better manage how much data the
app uses, use the Wi-Fi only setting. Your trip information will upload automatically once you’re back in a Wi-Fi zone.

  • Does the app use much battery power?

It uses the same amount of battery life as any other app that uses the phone’s GPS. Your phone needs to be charged to at least 15% before the app will be able to start tracking your driving data. It’ll also stop recording data when your battery
    reaches 15%.

  • What if I don’t have a smartphone?

You won’t be able to download the app and sign up for the en-route Auto Program.

  • Can I try en-route before I sign up?

No, you can’t try en-route before signing up. However, if you are unhappy with our program you can withdraw from the program at any time.

  • Who can I contact for questions?

Email the Client Service Support team or call 1-855-446-2667 (9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST).

  • Already an en-route device user?

Go to your my enroute dashboard to see details of your trips. Talk to your Financial Advisor
if you want to switch to the en-route mobile program.

  • Who can participate?

Currently, en-route is only available to our clients in Ontario who:

    • have Private Passenger Auto insurance with The Co-operators General Insurance Company (CGIC)
    • have a minimum of Liability coverage
    • are the principal or occasional operators on the policy, but the occasional operator can only participate when the principal operator on the same vehicle is also enrolled in the en-route Auto Program.
    • have either an iPhone or Android smartphone
  • If you live in a remote area with unreliable cell coverage, talk to us before joining. Your data may not transfer if you’re out of range. If your trip information isn’t uploading, check your phone settings. If you’re still experiencing problems,
    call 1-855-446-2667 (9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST).
  • Are Private Passenger Facility Association or Commercial vehicles eligible to participate?

No. Only Private Passenger vehicles insured by The Co-operators General Insurance Company (CGIC) are eligible at this time.

  • What information do you ask for?

For each driver signing up for the program, we’ll need your name, a unique cellphone number and email address, and your Co-operators General Insurance Company (CGIC) Auto policy number.

  • What happens after I join?

You’ll receive an email with an activation code. Download the app from Google Play or the App Store and use the code within seven days to finish your account setup. You’ll need to read and accept our terms and conditions before you can complete
your registration and then you’re all set. Your 5% discount will apply right away. If you don’t register after seven days, we’ll send you one reminder. After 14 days, the code will be deactivated, and we’ll remove your account and discount.

  • What’s expected of me?

Install the app on your smartphone and use the activation code to complete your account setup. We recommend you install the app only on the personal smartphone device you use most often, and not on tablets with cellular capabilities. If you
drive a vehicle that isn’t insured on your Auto policy, like a work vehicle, you should use the Snooze setting so that these trips don’t count against your discount.

  • If I share my vehicle with other drivers listed on my policy, do all drivers have to use the en-route program?

No. The app tracks only your driving habits. If other principal or occasional drivers on your Co-operators Ontario Auto policy want to track their own data, they’ll need to enrol and install the app on their own device.

  • Can other drivers affect my total score?

Yes. If you’re on a road trip and not driving, switch to Snooze so that the driver’s behaviours don’t affect your ratings. If you forget, you have seven days to change the driver information to Passenger after the trip.

  • Can I participate if I’m an UBER driver?

Yes. But, keep in mind that how much driving you do counts the most towards your discount.

  • Can I cancel my enrolment if I change my mind?

If you decide that the program isn’t right for you, you can cancel at any time; however, we’ll remove the en-route discount from your policy at the time of cancellation.

  • When will my 5% discount take effect?

You’ll receive a 5% discount on your vehicle’s insurance when you sign up, if you’re the principal operator. You’ll keep your 5% discount until your next renewal. At renewal, if you have 185 days of data and a minimum of 1,000 km, we’ll calculate
your discount based on the data collected. If you haven’t met these minimums, you’ll keep the 5% discount.

  • When does my new discount get calculated?

If, by your next renewal it’s been at least 185 days and 1,000 km since you enrolled and activated the app, we’ll re-evaluate your initial 5% discount. You may see more savings or less depending on your results: up to 25% or as low as 0%.

  • What impacts my discount?

    Discount rating factors include:

    • total kilometres driven
    • the intensity and the frequency of sudden acceleration and harsh braking
    • the time of day you drive

To earn the highest discount, drive shorter distances, avoid a lot of rapid acceleration or harsh braking events, and try not to drive between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m.

  • What kind of data do you use to calculate the discount?

Our vendor provides us with a data summary of several rating elements over time. This data summary includes scores for: total kilometres driven, kilometres driven between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m., and harsh braking and acceleration.

  • Why is driving at night riskier?

Statistically, you are more likely to have an accident when driving at night. Here are two main reasons why driving at night is riskier:

    • Fatigue: at night we’re more tired, more easily distracted and less focused on the road. (Ontario Ministry of Transportation)
    • Reduced visibility: we can’t see as well as we do during the day and we can be blinded by the lights of oncoming vehicles. (National Safety Council)
  • How does the app collect data?

The app uses your smartphone’s GPS to monitor the location, movement, status and your driving behaviour. This information is sent through a third-party vendor to our secure data centre.

  • How is the data processed and stored?

As you drive, the app captures trip data by receiving signals from GPS satellites. After every trip, the app uses Wi-Fi (if selected and available) or wireless data to send the data to a secure telematics hub for processing. If there’s no mobile
connection available, the app waits to transfer all data when Wi-FI is available.

  • Who has access to my data?

Our third-party vendor sends specific data to our secure data centre. The Co-operators will only use your driving information to evaluate your en-route Auto Program discount or with your consent. All information collected remains confidential
and is not shared unless required to do so by law. There are exceptional cases when we would have to disclose information without your knowledge and consent, including:

    • if required by law or to comply with a court order
    • to a lawyer for legal representation
    • to comply with a lawful government order
  • How do the scores work?

Acceleration and braking scores place your driving intensity on a scale from 10 to 100. Both the intensity and the frequency of sudden accelerations and harsh brakings will affect your scores. For the highest scores, try to accelerate gradually
and brake softly as much as possible. But, keep in mind that occasional defensive driving won’t skew your results: if you have to accelerate or brake suddenly to avoid an accident, don’t hesitate to do so. Your scored acceleration and braking
events are broken down into Major, Medium and Minor severity. How much you go over the thresholds, and for how long, affects the severity. You start at 100%, and the amount and types of events decrease your score over time.

  • What is the correlation between the score and the savings?

Each driving event (distance, time of day, how hard you accelerate and brake) have an assigned weighted value. These scores are then added together at the end of the year (up to 52 weeks) to get an overall score that corresponds to a discount
percentage. The discount associated to your overall score is:

  • Can my driving information be used by other parties outside of The Co-operators?

Your driving information will only be used by The Co-operators to evaluate your en-route Auto Program discount or as may otherwise be expressly consented to by you. However, there are exceptional circumstances when we would be required to disclose
information without your knowledge and consent, including: if required by law or to comply with a court order; to a lawyer for legal representation; or to comply with a lawful government order.

  • Will the app track and penalize me for speeding?

We track your speed only to measure acceleration and braking. Speeding doesn’t impact your rating. You won’t get a speeding ticket in the mail.

  • Can information gathered about my driving be used in a claim?

Yes. The data can be used to investigate, defend or settle a claim you make, and claims made against you or anyone else who drives your car.

  • Can my insurance cost go up with this program?

No. The information collected as part of the program is only used to reward safe drivers. It won’t be used to add charges or increase premiums. Depending on your driving behaviour, you may receive a lower variable discount at renewal. Maintaining
or improving your driving habits will help ensure your discount remains the same or increases.

  • 1.1 Who Sees Your Data

The en-route Mobile App has been developed by Intelligent Mechatronic Systems Inc. (“IMS“), is powered by IMS’ DriveSync® technology and has been customized by IMS for The Co-operators. Once the en-route Mobile App is downloaded
onto your mobile device, data describing driving and vehicle behaviour is collected by the en-route Mobile App and is then encrypted and transmitted wirelessly by the en-route Mobile App to IMS. In turn, IMS securely stores that data and provides
a copy of that data to The Co-operators. IMS also provides certain data (as described below) to Mapbox, Inc. (“Mapbox“), a third party component provider to IMS that provides the maps that IMS displays in the en-route Mobile
App and various other services. The Co-operators provides your current discount rate to IMS so that IMS can display that rate in the en-route Mobile App.

  • 1.2 What Data is Collected

In order to register you in the program, we provide IMS with your name, address, your contact details, policy number, telephone number and email address (collectively, the “Registration Data”). This information is needed for
IMS to properly identify which insurance policy the information applies to so that IMS may forward to us the data described below that applies to your policy. IMS retains all of your information in a secure fashion, with Registration Data kept
separate and distinct from any of the data collected by the en-route Mobile App. The en-route Mobile App collects data from your mobile device’s GPS, accelerometer and magnetometer, as well as data from your mobile device regarding its ID, and
its Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Cellular Data connection status (the “Mobile App Data“), and delivers it to IMS via your mobile device’s Cellular Data or Wi-Fi connection. IMS then provides the Mobile App Data to The Co-operators.
The en-route Mobile App does not collect Mobile App Data unless it determines that your mobile device is in motion, is likely travelling in a vehicle, and is using, among other things, data from your mobile device’s GPS and accelerometer. The
Mobile App Data and the outcome of any analysis we may conduct using the Mobile App Data, including the calculation of any discount that you are entitled to under the en-route Auto Program®, will be affected by all of the data collected
by the en-route Mobile App. In the event you are a passenger in a vehicle, travelling on public transportation, or otherwise not driving an automobile, the en-route Mobile App provides you with the option to pause the collection of Mobile App
Data for the duration of your trip, or to indicate that you were not driving within 14 days from the date after each trip. IMS provides Mapbox with the following anonymous data elements through the en-route Mobile App: (A) data regarding your
map usage events, which shall be sent to Mapbox on a per event basis: session start (the initial use of a map by you), map load (when a map is loaded, what map is loaded, and at what zoom level), map pan (when a map is panned), map zoom (when
a map is zoomed), and map tilt and rotate (when a map perspective is changed); (B) GPS data; and (C) the following attribute data, which is sent to Mapbox along with each data element listed in sections (A) and (B): session and instance identifiers
(universally unique identifiers (UUIDs)), which record the installation of the en-route Mobile App and its specific use in iOS or Android, and which are ephemeral in nature; smartphone information (model and operating system version), connectivity
method (Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Cellular Data), view data (device orientation, screen resolution and font scaling), timestamp (the time and date of the event), and the name, version, and application ID of the en-route Mobile App (the “Mapbox Data”).
IMS and The Co-operators do not provide Mapbox with your Registration Data.

  • 1.3 How Data is Used

The Mobile App Data will be used by The Co-operators as follows:

IMS uses the Mobile App Data to calculate a score for each trip that you take, your year-to-date score and the discount rate that you may be eligible for based on such score and displays them in the en-route Mobile App and, if you opt-in to the
ranking feature of the en-route Mobile App, ranks your score against all other en-route Mobile App users that have opted-in. IMS also uses the Mobile App Data internally to maintain and improve its proprietary hardware, software and other technology.
Certain information derived from the Mobile App Data will be displayed in the en-route Mobile App as follows:

The en-route Mobile App will also display the current discount applied to your policy, and an estimate of the discount that might be applied at your next renewal. The Mobile App Data will be retained by The Co-operators and IMS for 15 years from the date
that the Mobile App Data is collected. For greater certainty, The Co-operators will not use the Mobile App Data to:

IMS and The Co-operators will not use or disclose the Mobile App Data except as described in this Privacy Consent and Agreement, or as you may otherwise expressly consent from time to time. Mapbox uses the Mapbox Data only for the following limited
purposes: (I) to provide mapping functionality and mapping services within the en-route Mobile App; (II) to improve its mapping products and services and for internal diagnostic and analytic purposes; (III) to create aggregated and anonymized
usage statistics regarding the mapping functionality and mapping services that it provides via the en-route Mobile App that it may share with third parties; (IV) to provide anonymous information to The Co-operators and IMS regarding how the
en-route Mobile App is being used; and (V) to anonymously track the number of monthly active end users using the mapping functionality and mapping services within the en-route Mobile App by using a separate, generated, random ID which is used
only for this limited purpose and which cannot be identified to a particular end user. Mapbox will not use or disclose the Mapbox Data except as described in this Privacy and Consent Agreement, or as you may otherwise expressly consent from
    time to time.

  • 1.4 Calculation of Discount

Upon installation of the en-route Mobile App on your mobile device and enrollment in the en-route Auto Program®, you will receive a 5% premium discount on your vehicle’s insurance (the “Initial Discount”). During
your enrollment in the en-route Auto Program®, all other en-route Auto Program® premium discounts will be calculated each year on the date our policy renewal process commences, using the Mobile App Data collected during
the 52 weeks prior to such date. Our policy renewal process commences 60 days prior to the renewal date of your policy. In order to accurately calculate the premium discount that you are eligible for under the en-route Auto Program® as at the first renewal date of your policy after your enrollment in the en-route Auto Program®, you must have the en-route Mobile App installed on your mobile device and transmitting Mobile App Data for a minimum of 125 days prior
to the commencement of our policy renewal process. Further, you must drive at least 1000 km during such 125 day period. If these criteria are not met, the Initial Discount will continue to apply for the following policy year. Once the en-route
Mobile App has been installed on your mobile device for at least 125 days prior to the commencement of a policy renewal process and you have driven at least 1000 km, you will then be eligible for premium discounts under the en-route Auto Program®,
ranging from 0% to 25%. The Co-operators uses the following four criteria to establish whether you are eligible for the en-route Auto Program® discount and, if eligible, the amount of this discount:

In addition, The Co-operators uses the above criteria to calculate a score for each of your trips, along with a year to date score, and shares these scores with IMS so that they can be displayed in your en-route Mobile App as described above. If
there are multiple drivers insured under your policy for a particular vehicle that are enrolled in the en-route Auto Program®, the discount calculated for a vehicle will include the data collected for each such driver, and
weighted proportionately according to the kilometers that each driver drives (as measured by the en-route Mobile App).

For clients transitioning from The Co-operators OBD en-route Auto Program® only: Prior to the introduction of the en-route Mobile App, the en-route Auto Program® discount was calculated
using data that was delivered to IMS and The Co-operators using a telematics device plugged into the OBD2 (on-board diagnostics) port of a vehicle (the “OBD Program”). If you participated in the OBD Program and transition to
the en-route Mobile App, you will continue to receive the en-route Auto Program® premium discount calculated as at the time of your last renewal (the “OBD Discount”) until the en-route Mobile App has been installed
on your mobile device and has transmitted Mobile App Data for a minimum of 125 days prior to the commencement of a policy renewal process, and you have driven at least 1000 km during such 125 day period. If these criteria are not met during
the policy year that the en-route Mobile App is first installed on your mobile device, the OBD Discount will continue to apply for the following policy year. Once the en-route Mobile App has been installed on your mobile device for at least
125 days prior to the commencement of a policy renewal process and you have driven at least 1000 km, your premium discount will be calculated using Mobile App Data as described below for subsequent policy years.

  • 1.5 Disclaimer of Performance

Mobile App Data is collected for every trip you take, and is subject to the performance of your mobile device and may vary depending on the physical components of your mobile device, the version of the operating system that is installed on
your mobile device, your mobile device’s data connection and the circumstances of use of your mobile device. For a similar trip, the data generated by different mobile devices may vary, and this may impact the Mobile App Data and, ultimately,
any discount you may be eligible for through the en-route Auto Program®. The Co-operators makes no representations, warranties, or guarantees of any kind with respect to the performance of your mobile device and the Mobile App Data
    generated by your mobile device.

  • 1.6 Mandatory Disclosure to Third Parties

We will not disclose information about you to third parties without your express consent, except as described in this Privacy Consent and Agreement, or in circumstances where information collected by the en-route Mobile App is required to be
disclosed by law, which may include disclosure to third parties who have a legal right to require the disclosure of such information, such as the police or a party participating in a civil legal proceeding. Such disclosure would be exercised
pursuant to a warrant, subpoena or other court order or statutory authority.

  • 1.7 en-route Auto Program® Termination

If you don’t agree to this Privacy Consent and Agreement, the en-route Mobile App will not install on your mobile device, and you will not be enrolled in the en-route Auto Program®. If at any time you wish to cease the collection
and transmission of your information, simply delete the en-route Mobile App from your mobile device. Please note that if you delete the en-route Mobile App, we will assume you are withdrawing from the en-route Auto Program®. A notice
will be issued to you indicating that we have been made aware that the en-route Mobile App has been deleted and that we will be terminating your en-route Auto Program® discount at the time of your next policy renewal. In the event
your en-route Auto Program® discount is terminated in accordance with this paragraph, you will receive a final notification indicating that the en-route Auto Program® discount is terminated as at the effective date of your
next policy renewal. The en-route Auto Program® and your eligibility to participate in it are dependent on our receiving regular data updates from the en-route Mobile App. If the amount of data received from the en-route Mobile App
is insufficient for us to make a reasonable determination of your driving behaviour or if we determine that there is a pattern of: (a) deletions and re-installations, (b) pausing and un-pausing the collection of data by the en-route Mobile App,
or (c) indicating that you were not driving, that suggests the reported driving behaviour does not accurately reflect your actual driving behaviour, you may be removed from the en-route Auto Program® by us and you will no longer be
entitled to the en-route Auto Program® premium discount at the time of your next policy renewal. If we elect to remove you from the en-route Auto Program® because we have concluded that the use of the en-route Mobile App
by you does not accurately reflect your actual driving behaviour, we will provide notice to you that you are being removed from the en-route Auto Program® with your next policy renewal. Despite your withdrawal or removal from the
en-route Auto Program®, the terms of this Privacy Consent and Agreement, including, but not limited to, this Section 1.7, will continue to govern the Mobile App Data collected prior to such withdrawal or removal. Without limiting
the generality of the previous sentence, this means that The Co-operators may continue to use and disclose the Mobile App Data as described in this Privacy Consent and Agreement following such withdrawal or removal.

  • Part Two: Additional Terms, Conditions and Information

By downloading and installing the en-route Mobile App, you are also agreeing to the following terms and conditions:

  • 2.1 Installing Application

The en-route Mobile App will be operational and will be capable of transmitting Mobile App Data immediately upon installation. As a result, by downloading and installing the en-route Mobile App, you accept a non-exclusive, non-sublicensable,
and non-transferable license from IMS and The Co-operators to use the en-route Mobile App in accordance with the terms of this Privacy Consent and Agreement and the terms of the End User License Agreement . Participation in the en-route Auto Program® is subject to your mobile device being compatible with the most-recent version of the en-route Mobile App and you must ensure
that the most-recent version of the en-route Mobile App is installed at all times. Use of the en-route Mobile App may affect your battery life. You must ensure that your mobile device is charged and functional while you are driving so that the
Mobile App Data may be recorded.

  • 2.2 Your Obligations

Following installation, you agree as follows:

  • 2.3 Property of IMS / The Co-operators

The en-route Mobile App is and shall remain the property of IMS and The Co-operators. You may not reverse engineer, disassemble, decompile, alter, duplicate, translate, make copies, or create derivative works from the en-route Mobile App, or
otherwise attempt to derive the source code of the en-route Mobile App.

  • 2.4 Wireless Data

The en-route Mobile App transmits the Mobile App Data using your mobile device’s wireless data. You are responsible for assuming all roaming fees, data fees (including overage fees), plan fees and any other fees your mobile service provider
may charge you as a result of your installation and use of the en-route Mobile App. If you do not have a data plan for your mobile device, or do not wish to use your mobile device’s wireless data, the Mobile App Data can be transmitted using
    a Wi-Fi network.

  • 2.5 En-route Mobile App Not a Safety Device or Program

The en-route Mobile App is not intended for and cannot be used for the purpose of ensuring the safety of yourself or others or for any purpose where the reliability of the en-route Mobile App could create a situation where personal injury or
