Program details

What is the en-route Auto Program™?
The en-route Auto Program is a usage-based insurance program, using “telematics” technology, that’s available to Co-operators General Insurance Company (CGIC) auto insurance clients in Ontario. There are no costs associated with taking part.
How does the program work?
Upon enrolment, you will receive a small wireless telematics device that you will need to install in your vehicle’s OBD2 (on-board diagnostics) port, beneath the steering column. Not sure where to install it – watch this short installation video.

The device tracks and transmits data about vehicle use and driving behaviour, such as distance, travel time, location, rapid acceleration and sudden braking. The data is processed by a rating system that rewards safe drivers with greater savings.

Who can I contact for questions?
Our en-route Support Team can be contacted via email at en-route_Auto_Program@cooperators.ca or by phone at 1-855-446-2667 (9:00 am – 5:00 pm EST).
Who can participate?
At this time, the en-route Auto Program is only available to our clients in Ontario if: you have Private Passenger auto insurance with The Co-operators General Insurance Company (CGIC); you have a minimum of Liability Coverage year-round and your vehicle is at least 1997 or newer. Please note, if you reside in a remote area with poor cellular coverage, please consult with us before joining the program.

Additionally, approximately 5% of vehicles are incompatible with the program for one of three reasons: cosmetic, interference or functional. You can check your vehicles compatibility here. Or, you can also call a member of our en-route Support Team at en-route_Auto_Program@cooperators.ca or by phone at 1-855-446-2667 (9:00 am – 5:00 pm EST).

Are Private Passenger Facility Association or Commercial vehicles eligible to participate?
At this time, only Private Passenger vehicles insured by The Co-operators General Insurance Company (CGIC) are eligible.
Is there a cost to enrol in the program?
No. The en-route Auto Program™ is free. There is no cost to enrol and participate.
What information do you ask for?
We’ll collect information about you (name, address, phone and email), as well as information about your car (Co-operators auto policy and vehicle make, model and year).
What happens after I enrol?
You will receive an email confirming your enrollment in the program. Next, we’ll mail you your device with an installation Quick Start guide that explains where and how to plug-in your device, as well as how to access your myenroute Dashboard.
What’s expected of me?
Simply install the device in your vehicle once you receive it and activate your online account at myenroute.cooperators.ca. Please ensure that your first login to your myenroute Dashboard is completed on a computer or iPad/tablet, and not on a smartphone. That’s all you need to do! Now you can start driving safer and start saving!
Can I cancel my enrolment if I change my mind?
If you decide that the program isn’t right for you, you can cancel at any time. However, you will be required to return your device and the en-route discount will be removed from your policy at the time of cancellation.
Is professional installation required?
No, installation is quick and easy and does not require professional assistance.
Where and how do I plug-in/install the device?
A telematics device is installed in your vehicle’s OBD2 port, beneath the steering column. Not sure where your OBD2 port is? This short video demonstrates common locations for installing your device. Upon enrolment, you will receive an installation Quick Start Guide that explains where and how to plug-in your device.
Does installation take very much time?
Installation of the device should take very few minutes. You simply remove it from the box, locate the port, plug in the device and you’ll be ready to roll.
Can I install a device in each of my cars?
Yes. The device is compatible with most cars that are 1997 and newer, so we can send you a device for each of your eligible cars. However; approximately 5% of vehicles are incompatible with the program for one of three reasons: cosmetic, interference or functional. You can check your vehicles compatibility by entering your VIN (vehicle identification number) into our online compatibility tool. Or, you can also call a member of our en-route Support Team at en-route_Auto_Program@cooperators.ca or by phone at 1-855-446-2667 (9:00 am – 5:00 pm EST).

As well, you may switch the device between a summer and winter vehicle, as long as each car has a minimum of Liability Coverage for the entire time you’re driving it.

Does the device report in “real time”?
The device will start to upload data following a trip—but only once the ignition is turned off. You can locate the last known location of your vehicle by viewing your myenroute Dashboard page.
When will my 5% discount take effect?
You will receive an initial 5% discount on your vehicle’s insurance, effective at enrolment. You will keep your 5% discount until your next renewal and until you have passed the 125-day and 1,000-km mark.
When does my new discount get calculated?
At your next renewal – and after you have passed the 125-day and 1,000-km mark – your initial 5% discount will be reevaluated. You may see more or less savings depending on your results, up to 25%.
What impacts my discount?
Discount rating factors include: the number of rapid acceleration and sudden braking events relative to distance; total kilometres driven; and the times of day you drive. To maximize your discount, avoid large numbers of rapid acceleration or harsh braking events, minimize your distance travelled, and try to limit your driving between 1:00 am and 5:00 am.
Why is driving more risky at night?
There are two main reasons why driving holds more risk at night:

Can my insurance go up with the en-route Auto Program™?
No. The information collected as part of the program is only used to reward safe drivers and will not result in surcharges or premium increases.
Will occasional erratic driving behaviour, such as braking hard to avoid a collision, negatively impact my discount?
The device is designed to measure regular driving behaviours and habits. Occasional instances of defensive driving will not skew your results. Try to avoid rapid acceleration and hard braking in general, but your safety must come first. If you have to accelerate or brake suddenly to avoid an accident, don’t hesitate to do so!
Is my discount just for my vehicle(s) with a device, or does it apply to my whole auto policy?
Your discount is specific to the vehicle in which you have installed a device. If you have two vehicles on your auto policy, and both have devices, you will have two separate discount rating factors.
How does the device collect data?
The device uses wireless communication to monitor the location, movement, status and behaviour of a vehicle. This information is recorded and wirelessly transmitted through a third party vendor to our secure data centre. Consolidated data is made available to you via your personalized myenroute Dashboard.
Who has access to my device data?
Our third party vendor sends certain data to our secure data centre. This data is used by The Co-operators specifically to calculate your discount, and includes: sudden braking, rapid acceleration, time of day you drive, and total mileage. We also collect GPS data so you can access your ‘trip maps’ online via your myenroute Dashboard. The Co-operators does not use your GPS data for any purposes whatsoever. Please be assured that all information collected remains confidential and is not shared.

Note: There are exceptional circumstances when we would be required to disclose information without your knowledge and consent, including: if required by law or to comply with a court order; to a lawyer for legal representation; or to comply with a lawful government order.

Could the device void my vehicle’s warranty?
We are not aware of vehicle warranties being impacted by the use of a device. The device is inserted into a standard OBD2 port; the same port is used extensively by dealerships and mechanics to draw diagnostic information from a vehicle (i.e. emissions testing). However, we recommend that you consult with your vehicle’s manufacturer for more extensive information.
Will the device track and penalize me for speeding?
Although we track your speed to post on your myenroute Dashboard for your reference only, this information is not used when we calculate your savings.
Can information gathered about my driving be used in a claim?
Ontario insurance regulations do not currently allow for en-route Auto Program™ data to be used during claims adjudication.
Can the devices be hacked?
We take your privacy and security very seriously. The devices use a single communication channel facilitated over a private, secure and encrypted virtual network, and they do not accept communications initiated by external sources. In fact, only the device itself can initiate communication, and it can only communicate with our technology provider. There have never been any reported incidents of hacking involving these devices.
I tried to access my account through the myenroute Dashboard before plugging in my device but it wouldn't let me in. What’s happening?
Most likely, something is wrong with your account as the order in which you ‘plug-in your device’ vs. ‘access your Dashboard’ should not matter. Our en-route Auto Program support team will need to open a case to help resolve the issue. Contact them at en-route_Auto_Program@cooperators.ca or by phone at 1-855-446-2667 (9:00 am – 5:00 pm EST).
My OBD2 port is in my fuse box and I cannot replace the cover. What can I do?
Your vehicle presents an exceptional circumstance with its OBD2 port in the fuse box, and unfortunately there’s no solution at this time. We do not have alternative positioning suggestions, nor do we have any smaller devices. Please contact the en-route Auto Program™ Support Team or by phone at 1-855-446-2667 (9:00 am – 5:00 pm EST) for further information and to discuss next steps.
My device is not reporting as expected or accurately. What’s happening?
Usually, this problem can be resolved with a “reset” of your device. Before starting your ignition, take a moment to completely remove the device from its port. After 1 full minute, please plug your device back in; your device is now reset. Now you can continue to drive as you normally would. Trips should start to appear in your online portal within 24 hours of your reset.

Should your device continue to inaccurately report trips, please contact the en-route Auto Program™ Support Team or by phone at 1-855-446-2667 (9:00 am – 5:00 pm EST) for further assistance.

I would like to transfer my device to another vehicle. How do I do that?
In order to complete a telematics device transfer, please provide your new vehicle’s Make, Model, Year and VIN to our en-route Auto Program™ Support Team.

Once we have received this information, we will check the vehicle for compatibility and proceed accordingly with the transfer, and contact you with updates.

What kind of data do you use for discount rating?
Our vendor will provide us with a data summary of several “rating elements” over a period of time (typically one week). This data summary will include: total kilometres driven; kilometres driven between 1:00am and 5:00am; number of harsh braking events; and number of sudden braking and rapid acceleration events.
How do I view my driving information?
When you receive your telematics device, you will receive a username and password to access your personalized myenroute Dashboard. From your dashboard, you can view your real-time driving reports.
Is acceleration tracked differently in standard vs. automatic vehicles?
No, acceleration is tracked the same for standard vs. automatic vehicles.
Can my driving information be used by other parties outside of The Co-operators?
Your driving information will only be used by The Co-operators to evaluate your auto policy discount or as may otherwise be expressly consented to by you. However, there are exceptional circumstances when we would be required to disclose information without your knowledge and consent, including: if required by law or to comply with a court order; to a lawyer for legal representation; or to comply with a lawful government order.
Wheel-spinning: why does my device report this as “rapid acceleration” and then “sudden braking”?
Wheel-spinning is a common and often unavoidable occurrence in inclement weather due to slippery or icy roads. Even though your vehicle doesn’t actually move when this happens, its speed sensor changes dramatically (acceleration/deceleration), which can trigger a “rapid acceleration” and “sudden braking” alert simultaneously. As these situations are typically rare, they would have no real impact on your overall discount.

en‐route Auto Program™ Privacy Consent and Program Participation Agreement

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
Thank you for your interest in The Co‐operators en‐route Auto Program™. If you wish to participate in this program you will be required to install a wireless communications device (the “DriveSync® device”) in your vehicle that will collect, transmit and store certain information about you and those who are driving your vehicle.
IF YOU DO NOT AGREE WITH THESE TERMS AND CONDITIONS DO NOT INSTALL THE DEVICE.
In this Privacy Consent and Program Participation Agreement (the “Privacy Consent and Agreement”) any of the terms “we”, “us” or “The Co‐operators” refer to Co‐operators General Insurance Company.
Part One: Privacy Statement and Information Collection Consent
By installing the DriveSync® device you are consenting for yourself, and promising that you have or will obtain the prior consent of any other person who drives the vehicle, to the collection, use and disclosure of information as set out in section 1.2 below. In addition to this document the collection, use and disclosure of your information and that of any person driving the vehicle by The Co‐operators are governed by our privacy policy. However this document is specific to the en‐route Auto Program™ and should there be any conflict between this document and our general privacy policy, the terms of this document shall prevail. For more information about The Co‐operators Privacy Policy please speak with your advisor or visit http://www.cooperators.ca/en/PublicPages/Privacy.aspx.
The terms and conditions in this document govern the collection, use and disclosure of your information and that of any person driving the vehicle in respect of the en‐route Auto Program™.
PLEASE NOTE: It is your obligation to inform any driver of the vehicle, before he or she drives it, that (a) the DriveSync® device is installed in the vehicle, and (b) this Privacy Consent and Agreement applies to such driver if he or she drives it.
1.1 Who Sees Your Data
The DriveSync® device that we provide to you is supplied by a third party called Intelligent Mechatronic Systems Inc. (“IMS”). Once the DriveSync® device is installed in your vehicle, data describing driving and vehicle behaviour is collected by the DriveSync® device and is then encrypted and transmitted wirelessly by the DriveSync® device to IMS. In turn IMS stores and provides the data more specifically described in section 1.2 to The Co‐operators.
1.2 What Data is Collected
In order to register you in the program we provide IMS with your name, your contact details, policy number, telephone number, email address and vehicle details (Vehicle Identification Number (“VIN”), year, make and model) (the “Registration Data”). This information is needed in order to send you the DriveSync® Device and for IMS to properly identify which insurance policy the information applies to in order that IMS may forward to us the information that originates from your vehicle and applies to your policy.
IMS retains all of your information in a secure fashion with Registration Data kept separate and distinct from any of the data collected by the DriveSync® device. The DriveSync® device collects data on your vehicle’s VIN, your vehicle’s GPS location, the trips your vehicle takes, the times of day your vehicle is driven, your vehicle’s speed, the distance your vehicle travels, sudden braking and rapid acceleration events, disconnections of the DriveSync® device, and details about your vehicle such as fuel consumption (may be estimated on some vehicles) and idle time (the “Driving‐Related Data”). Information is collected both by the device itself and through information downloaded to the device from your vehicle’s onboard computer systems.
IMS will give The Co‐operators access to only the following pieces of Driving‐Related Data: (a) how many kilometres your vehicle travels, (b) the times your vehicle is driven, (c) harsh or sudden braking or acceleration events (d) GPS information including your vehicle’s location and speed and (e) whether the DriveSync® device has been disconnected from your vehicle. These pieces of Driving‐Related data received by The Co‐operators from IMS will be used to calculate whether you are eligible for the en‐route Auto Program™ discount and if eligible, the amount of this discount.
Except as described in this Privacy Consent and Agreement, or as you or other drivers of your vehicle may otherwise expressly consent from time to time, IMS and The Co‐operators will not use, disclose or provide any identifiable information about you or such other drivers that may be included in the Registration Data or in the Driving‐Related data.
You and all other drivers of your vehicle are consenting to such transmittal, download, retrieval, access, storage, and use of the Registration Data and Driving‐Related data by IMS and The Co‐operators as required to administer and deliver the services referred to in this Privacy Consent and Agreement to you and to the Co‐operators, and for any other purpose that you and all other drivers of your vehicle may otherwise expressly consent to from time to time.
1.3 How The Co‐operators Uses the Data
The DriveSync® device does not tell us who is driving the vehicle at any given time and we will have access to only those pieces of Driving‐Related Data provided to us by IMS as discussed in section 1.2 above. Accordingly any discount that you are entitled to under the en‐route Auto Program™ will be affected by the driving activity of anyone who drives your vehicle. The Driving‐Related data collected by The Co‐operators from IMS will be used along with traditional rating factors to determine the overall premium you will pay for insurance and to determine your eligibility for the en‐route Auto Program™ discount. GPS data provided to The Co--
operators cannot be used to track the movements of a vehicle or locate a lost or stolen vehicle. However, you may be able to track your vehicle’s location through the use of the secure portal to which you will have access as part of the en‐route Auto Program™. Please see section 2.4 below for more information about the secure portal.
1.4 Mandatory Disclosure to Third Parties
Although we will not disclose information about you without your express consent, or about other drivers of your vehicle without their express consent, you should be aware that circumstances exist where information collected by the DriveSync® device may be disclosed by us or IMS without consent where it is required by law, which may include disclosure to third parties who have a legal right to require the disclosure of such information, such as the police or a party participating in a civil legal proceeding. Such disclosure would be exercised pursuant to a warrant, subpoena or other statutory authority.
1.5 Program Termination
If at any time you wish to cease the collection, use and transmission of your information, remove the device from your vehicle and contact us promptly to return it (see section 2.5). Please note if you remove the device without first notifying us we will assume you are withdrawing from the en‐route Auto Program™. A notice will be issued to you that we have noticed that the device has been disconnected and that we will be terminating your discount at the time of your policy renewal. In the event your discount is terminated in accordance with this paragraph you will receive a final notification in the mail indicating that the discount is terminated as at the effective date of your policy renewal. If you wish for any reason to disconnect the device without withdrawing from the program please contact us or your advisor prior to removing the device.
The en‐route Auto Program™ and your eligibility to participate in it are dependent on our receiving regular data updates from the DriveSync® device installed in your vehicle. If the amount of data received from your vehicle is insufficient for us to make a reasonable determination or if we determine that there is a pattern of disconnects and reconnects that suggests the reported driving behaviour does not accurately reflect the actual vehicle use, you may be removed from the en‐route Auto Program™ by us and you will no longer be entitled to the en‐route Auto Program™ premium discount at the time of your policy renewal. If we elect to remove you from the program because we have concluded that the use of the device by you and the other persons driving your vehicle will not accurately reflect the actual vehicle use, we will provide notice to you that you are being removed from the en‐route Auto Program™ with your next policy renewal.
Part Two: Additional Terms, Conditions and Information
By installing the DriveSync® device you are also agreeing to the following terms and conditions:
2.1 Device Installation
The DriveSync® device is installed in your vehicle by plugging it into the data port on your vehicle. The DriveSync® device will be operational and will begin transmitting information immediately upon installation. As a result, by installing the DriveSync® device in your vehicle, you accept a non‐exclusive, non‐sublicensable, and non‐transferable licence from IMS to the DriveSync® device in accordance with the terms of this licence.

You understand that wireless data transmission service may be temporarily interrupted or limited, for which the wireless carrier shall have no liability, because of natural or artificial conditions or usage concentrations, modifications, upgrades, relocation or repairs of the transmission network.
2.4 DriveSync® Web Portal Terms
As a participant in the en‐route Auto Program™, IMS will provide you with access to a secure portal that will enable you to view details on your driving behaviour and that of anyone driving your vehicle, the environmental impact, trips you’ve taken, your vehicle’s health and your personalized device settings. This secure portal also offers you the capability of setting alerts and notifications for driving zones (geofences), speed thresholds, unauthorized driving periods, and rapid acceleration and sudden braking events. The Co‐operators will not have access to this information (unless you experience technical difficulties and provide your consent to grant access to a technical support person).
Before being given access to the secure web portal you will be required to agree to the DriveSync® Web Portal Terms and Conditions that will be made available to you. The DriveSync® Web Portal is a valued added service provided by IMS. You are not obligated to use the DriveSync® Web Portal in order to participate in the en‐route Auto Program™.

YOU AGREE THAT THE LIABILITY OF THE CO‐OPERATORS FOR DAMAGES CAUSED BY THE DRIVESYNC® DEVICE SHALL BE LIMITED TO PROPERTY DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE IN WHICH IT IS INSTALLED. FURTHER, THE CO‐OPERATORS SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION, DAMAGES FOR BODILY INJURY OR DAMAGE TO OTHER VEHICLES OR PROPERTY, CAUSED BY OR RESULTING FROM THE DEVICE HAVING BEEN INSTALLED IN THE VEHICLE.
